What to look for in a bed pad

Three things, in this order. Absorbency and containment — the core needs to take liquid down quickly and hold it, rather than letting it spread sideways to the edge of the pad and then onto the sheet. The backing — a properly sealed waterproof layer, so the mattress or chair underneath is genuinely protected. The top sheet — the specification most often ignored and the one that decides whether a pad is tolerable for nightly use. A stiff or plastic-feeling surface causes irritation over time, particularly on thin or fragile skin.

Choosing a pack size

The 20 pack is there so you can try them before committing — absorbent products vary a great deal between brands and it is worth finding out on twenty rather than fifty. The 30 pack is roughly a month of nightly use. The 50 pack is the lowest cost per pad, for long-term or multi-user situations.

Where they are used

At home, in residential and nursing care, in hospital and long-term care settings, during recovery after surgery, for night-time bedwetting in children, and as a changing mat.
