Why reusable rather than disposable

A season lasts around three weeks and comes round roughly twice a year. Disposable nappies over that period run into hundreds of units and a bin bag of plastic. Three washable pants cover the same period indefinitely — wash, dry, rotate — and the maths stops being close after the first season.

Five layers, doing different jobs

The lining against your dog is a moisture-wicking jersey that pulls liquid away from the skin, which is what prevents the rash and irritation that comes from a wet layer sitting in place for hours. Beneath it sit three microfibre absorbent layers. The outer shell is waterproof PUL fabric, so nothing reaches your sofa, your car seat or your bed.

Fit is the whole game

A dog nappy that doesn't fit leaks, and a dog nappy that fits too tightly gets chewed off. These have an elasticated tail hole, elasticated leg openings, and adjustable snap fastenings with an extra loop so you can tune the waist rather than accept whichever of two positions is least wrong. Measure your dog's waist before ordering — it is the single thing that determines whether these work for you.

Size guide

• XS — waist 16 to 33cm (6.5 to 13 inches)
• S — waist 23 to 40cm (9 to 15.7 inches)
• M — waist 34 to 58cm (13.5 to 22.7 inches)
• L — waist 41 to 70cm (16 to 27.5 inches)

Measure around the narrowest part of the waist, just in front of the hind legs. If your dog falls between two sizes, take the larger.

Not only for seasons

• Incontinence — in older dogs, day or night
• Excitement urination — common in young dogs and usually outgrown
• Post-surgery — while mobility or control is reduced
• Travel and visiting — in other people's houses and in the car

Washing

Machine washable at 30 to 40 degrees. Skip fabric softener — it coats the microfibre and reduces absorbency over time. Line dry or tumble on low.
