We'd rather say that plainly than leave you clicking a buy button that doesn't work. Everything below still holds when they return, and it's worth knowing whether or not you wait for us.

Every dog owner buys these for the next ten to fifteen years, which makes it worth spending five minutes getting them right once. The two things that matter are thickness and size, and almost every complaint about poo bags traces back to one of them.

Thickness: 17 micron

Bag thickness is measured in microns. Supermarket own-brand bags typically sit around 10 to 12. Ours are 17. That difference decides whether you can feel what you are carrying, whether the bag survives being brushed against a hedge, and whether it opens cleanly on a cold morning — thin bags fuse shut in low temperatures and are close to impossible to separate with gloves on.

Size

Our roll bags are 9 x 13 inches, the tie-handle bags 7 x 14.5 inches. Both are cut with enough material above the contents that your hand stays clear and you can tie a proper knot rather than a hopeful twist. Undersized bags are a false economy for anything bigger than a terrier.

Format: rolls or tie handles

• Rolls — load into any standard clip-on dispenser. We make these in 270, 330 and 660 packs.
• Tie handles — two loops you pull together, no knot needed. A flat pack, so they don't fit a cylindrical dispenser. 300 pack.

Scented or unscented

Scented bags mask; they don't remove. Some people find the combination of fragrance and the thing underneath worse than the thing on its own. Our 270 pack is unscented, the 300 and 660 packs are scented, and the 330 pack lets you choose.

Material

All our bags are made from a corn starch blend rather than conventional plastic, and the roll cores and outer packaging use recycled material. All are black and fully opaque. How much to buy

One dog walked twice daily gets through roughly 100 bags a month. On that basis a 270 pack lasts two to three months and a 660 pack around seven to eight. Bags don't expire and store flat, so the larger packs are almost always the better purchase.
